So this [PDF] is what’s supposed to help rally the Catholic troops today. I considered popping down to St. Aloysius Church right next door to me, but whilst I want to sit through and experience the weirdness of Mass at some point, I decided on balance that trying to listen to the reading of this intolerance wasn’t the best of ideas.
As expected, the letter is little more than a summary of everything we’ve already heard by now: a rigid insistence that ‘gay marriage’ is a paradox because it’s written in the stars that it must be a heterosexual union. And why? Because the purpose is procreation, and the Holy Spirit is involved (that fact making marriage, I guess, technically a threesome). It’s more than a personal commitment. It’s ‘spiritual’, and that precludes the possibility of the recognition of homosexual love, and if you don’t see that then you’re missing the reality of the way the world is.
There is one new line, however, that’s quietly but easily the most offensive thing written yet:
Understood as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman, and for the creation and upbringing of children, marriage is an expression of our fundamental humanity.
Humanity. Gay people can’t have that. Or at least, their possession of it will remain forever unlocked.
Long live Christian love, equality, imago dei.
